From the engine workshop

Let’s talk about quality…

These pages feature examples of classics that we at VW Airhouse have breathed new life into. With great passion, craftsmanship and attention to detail, we work on air-cooled classics – always with a high standard of quality in mind. Here are some examples: https://vwairhouse.nl/projecten

Still, we want to take a moment to point out something we unfortunately encounter on a regular basis: poor revision work done by others. Proud owners of beautiful classics knock on our door because, despite a previous overhaul, their engine is not performing well or the car’s handling leaves something to be desired.

For example, we see engines with a warped crankshaft, leading to irregular engine running and excessive wear on bearing shells – problems that are easily preventable with careful work. We also often find engine blocks where excessive amounts of sealant have been used. Too much sealant can release into the crankcase, clogging the small oil channels. A good fitting surface has enough of a normal gasket to prevent oil leakage. And if sealant is used anyway: a thin layer is more than enough for a perfect seal.

This is not a story to point fingers to others, but rather a call to be critical. There is no such thing as a cheap engine overhaul. Bad overhaul work ends up being expensive, because all the faults and residues of inferior material must be removed before we can start over.

Our belief: engage in conversation and get explained what will be done and convince yourself of the quality of the materials and methods used. Thus, every investment in overhaul is rewarded with reliability, durability and, above all, great driving pleasure.
